EXPLORATION ANNUAL EXHIBIT AND THE ANNUAL MEMBER’S SHOW

The CCC hosts two annual exhibits: Exploration and the All Members Show. To participate in these exhibits, you must be a member in good standing of the Chicago Calligraphy Collective.

Exploration 2009

The 23rd Annual Juried Exhibition of the Chicago Calligraphy Collective at the Newberry Library
February 9 – March 28, 2009. Artist’s Reception February 21, 2009, 11AM-3PM
Presentations begin at 1PM

This annual juried exhibit showcases the best calligraphic art from Chicago Calligraphy Collective members. The Collective draws members from local talent and world-wide members as well. Any calligraphic art accepted into this exhibit has the opportunity to vie for the Newberry Purchase Prize. Each year, through generous donations from the CCC and a private donor, the Newberry Library is able to purchase one-of-a-kind, original artwork to be included in its prestigious calligraphic collection. The John M. Wing Foundation on the History of Printing is one of the world’s leading collections in its field and housed at The Newberry Library.

Join members of the Chicago Calligraphy Collective (CCC) to view the twenty-third annual juried show and meet many of the exhibiting artists. A special exhibit will be featured along with Explorations. Treewhispers is an installation of an international collaboration involving paper, art and stories relating to trees as a symbol and resource. This amazing installation will be presented in the gallery next to the Explorations exhibit. Pamela Paulsrud is one of the artists who developed Treewhispers [www.treewhispers.com]. Ms. Paulsrud is also a member of the CCC and she will offer a presentation about her work. Join us in hearing more about the Treewhispers installation: its history and development and future.

Additionally, find out which Explorations piece will become part of the Newberry’s calligraphy collections when Paul F. Gehl, Custodian of the Newberry’s John M. Wing Foundation for the History of Printing, announces the 2009 winner of the Purchase Award. The annual Purchase Award enables the Newberry to acquire one exhibited piece to strengthen the calligraphy holdings of its distinguished John M. Wing Foundation for the History of Printing.

Admission is free; no reservation is required.

We’ve gone digital!

Since 2004, all submissions for the annual Exploration show are required to be submitted via regular mail on a CD-ROM. The advent of the digital era has created new challenges in photographing one’s art work. For tips and hints on how to successfully accomplish this, please see the article “How to Take Digital Pictures of Your Artwork” by Rick Borstein.

All Members’ Show

Coming up in 2009 — Check back for information!

Annual All Member’s Show
Conrad Sulzer Regional Library
4455 North Lincoln Avenue, Chicago

The library hours are: 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and Saturday; 1-5 p.m. Sunday.

For those who may be wary about submitting work for the juried show, we encourage you to participate in the CCC’s annual non-juried exhibit. This exhibit is open to all CCC calligraphers, beginning, intermediate, advanced or professional.

For the past several years, Chicago’s Sulzer Regional Library (www.chipublib.org/002branches/sulzer/sulzer.html) has graciously provided space for the Chicago Calligraphy Collective to achieve its goal of increasing public awareness of the art of calligraphy and hand lettering. This is a wonderful opportunity to share your love of letters with others!

Please contact our Exhibits Director with any questions regarding these two exhibits.
